The Story: The Ultimate Freedom

Once upon a time, in a distant land, there was a goddess. As any god you ever heard of, she had powers of unimaginable beauty. She could do whatever she wanted and she was very good at it. Sometimes, she felt like everything she lived through wasn’t enough.

One day, she looked at others gods and goddesses and noticed that there was something different between her and others. One was god of commerce, one was goddess of love, one was god of death and one was goddess of life. Every other god was being the god of something.

The problem was that she was very good at everything the others gods were representing, so she didn’t know what to choose to the goddess of. Everything she thought of, she found out soon enough that there was already a patron god of that aspect.

This was so disturbing to our goddess that, even though she had infinite powers, she couldn’t find an actual reason to continue existing. When she had this realization, she felt, at first, destroyed. She actually thought there is no reason to live, to exist for any more.

And one day, as she was pondering the actual reasons for her existence, she came by a living sphinx, who were renowned for both their riddles and powerful answers. Just for fun, she thought she could outwit the sphinx by telling him the troubling conclusion she came to.

After hearing her out, the sphinx took a deep breath and said to her:

“My dear and beloved goddess, you have reached a state of freedom so high that other gods don’t even think about it. All you have to do is to choose what to do with the powers that were given to you. It’s not about fining the answer, is about choosing what you want.”

The moment she realized what the sphinx told her, every last piece and inhabitant of our world became brighter.

She knew she wasn’t supposed to be the goddess of anything, because she could be the goddess of everything when she wanted to.

Nowadays she is still beautifying the world with her vision just because she chose to. Sometimes she makes the flowers bloom, sometimes she “miraculously” heals the sick and more and more inventors could’ve swore they heard the new ideas from thin air! Even today, she is not the goddess of anything, but people started to call her the Goddess of Freedom or the Goddess of Choice.

The Practical Shortcut: How to know what You want

Most of us weren’t raised to know what we want. We were told first by our parents, then by our teachers, our friends or our managers what’s best for us. It was a natural thing to do and we needed that because that’s how we became the people who we are today.

I’ve been in the situation of not deciding what I wanted. I had a vague idea of what I wanted and I got a bit of everything and nothing really worked out. I arrived at the moment where I put myself in a situation where the only way forward was to specifically decide what I wanted.

Everything that wasn’t relevant to my decision easily dissolved. It’s a fulfilling path, both because the destination but especially because of the road.

There comes a time in your life when the only person who has authority over your life is yourself.

Usually those moments come when you start to ask yourself some questions that resembles something like:

  • What do I want to do with my life?
  • Why am I here on this Earth?
  • What my purpose?
  • Who am I?

You might have the (un)conscious tendency to try to get these answers from others, be it religion, self-help gurus, science or actually parents, teachers, friends or any other person that has some authority.

Though any of these might help you, the truth is that the only one who can decide what to do with your life is yourself.

Perhaps you are not used to deciding what you want, perhaps you never really took the time to get the answer to that question, other than the ones you’re “supposed to”.

The first step is to realize that you’re not “supposed to” or “obligated to” be doing or being anything. This is a beautiful way to enjoy true freedom because freedom is being able to choose what you want. Whatever the current circumstances are in your life right now, getting what you want starts by choosing specifically what you want.

Without deciding what you want, whatever you do won’t bring much improvements in your life or to others.

By the way, you can always choose something different whenever you want. It’s ok to change your mind. That’s how much freedom you have.

Deciding what you specifically want is very similar to ordering food at a restaurant. You don’t tell the waiter to give you food, you specify what type of food you want from the menu.

It’s the same in your life just that the menu contains everything and the waiter, the cook and the client are one and the same, yourself.

So, how do you decide what you specifically want?

You choose.

Think of the most important aspect of your life right now. It usually is something around your professional life, your relationships or your well-being. Write down what you specifically what you want to have in your life’s aspect of your choice.

It’s not writing you want happiness, love, and fulfillment. It’s about writing down specific things, like the description of the job you want, the number and characteristic of the clients you want, the kind of person you want to be in a relationship with or how you want to feel in your current relationship.

You have 2 benchmarks here:

  1. If you’re wondering if it’s too general or unclear, go more specific.
  2. Imagine you have to explain what you what to a genie from the lamp that has the understanding of a 12 year old. If there are any things you don’t know how to explain, dig a little deeper or do a research. That research can be on the internet or by having new experiences in that area.
